1st MidAmerica Credit Union Data Breach Exposes Social Security Numbers

1st MidAmerica Credit Union (MACU), a financial institution based in Bethalto, Illinois, reported a significant data breach that occurred in December 2024. The breach allowed an external actor to access and potentially exfiltrate sensitive files containing personal identifiable information (PII) belonging to thousands of members.

Attackers breached the MACU network between December 5 and December 10, 2024. The credit union discovered the activity on December 10, 2024, blocked access and started an investigation. The compromised data includes:

  • Full names
  • Social Security numbers

The number of affected individuals is reported at 131,000. It's not clear why the incident report was delayed for more than a year.

1st MidAmerica Credit Union began sending notification letters to affected individuals detailing the nature of the compromise. It's not clear if the company has offered complimentary credit monitoring services to mitigate the risk of identity theft. Security professionals recommend that victims place a fraud alert or a credit freeze on their files at the major credit bureaus.

The incident has  become the subject of investigations by consumer rights law firms.
