A suspected ransomware attack has impacted Auckland Transport's Hop card system, causing disruptions to card top-ups and reducing the functionality of customer service centers. Auckland Transport (AT) spokespersons have indicated that their initial assessment points to a ransomware attack, although investigations are ongoing. No personal or financial data has been accessed during this incident.
AT believes the attack is an isolated event and assures commuters that they can still use public transportation, even if they are unable to top up their AT Hop cards. Staff and operators are taking measures to ensure that passengers can tag on and off as usual.
Several services related to the Hop card system have been affected.
- Online top-ups and services on the AT website using MyAT Hop are currently unavailable. While existing auto top-up features will continue to work, there may be delays in payment processing.
- Ticket and top-up machines are temporarily accepting only cash payments, as Eftpos and credit card transactions are unavailable, and some machines may not function properly.
- Customer service centers also have limited functionality and may only accept cash payments, while AT Hop retailers cannot perform top-ups or load concessions onto Hop cards.
Auckland Transport has activated its security protocols. They are working closely with expert partners to resolve the issue as quickly as possible, although a full restoration of services may take until early next week. AT assures the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted, and further details will be provided once the investigation is completed.
Update - Auckland Transport reported that its AT HOP system is likely to be restored to customers on Tuesday, 19th of September.
