The Austin Independent School District (AISD) has reported a privacy breach due to the accidental release of special education student records. The leaked documents contained comprehensive details about the students' most recent special education or 504 plans.
The incident, impacting about 160 students, stemmed from a coding error introduced during a recent system update to the EasyIEP platform, which AISD utilizes for managing special education reporting. The glitch, identified on December 16, mistakenly modified notification settings, resulting in notifications or signature requests being sent to individuals not authorized to view sensitive information, including emergency contacts like neighbors or grandparents.
Public Consulting Group, the company managing EasyIEP responded by deactivating the links that had been mistakenly sent out to prevent any further unauthorized access to the documents.
AISD has taken this incident seriously and is taking steps to prevent future occurrences by planning to strengthen their collaboration with the vendor.
