Austria's Ministry of the Interior (BMI) is reporting a cyberattack that compromised approximately 100 government email accounts out of its total 60,000 accounts. The incident was discovered several weeks prior to its public announcement on August 30, 2025.

The cyberattack is suspected to be executed by state and semi-state actors. The breach was initially detected when IT security personnel identified irregularities in one of the ministry's office IT systems during routine monitoring operations.

All affected employees were directly notified about the compromise of their accounts, and external IT security experts were brought in to assist with the investigation and remediation efforts. Forensic investigation confirmed that unauthorized actors had gained access to the BMI's mail servers.

The nature of the attack is not disclosed. The number of affected individuals is not disclosed.

Austrian government officials claim that the cyberattack did not result in the compromise of sensitive citizen data or critical law enforcement information.

The Austrian Federal Criminal Police Office's cybercrime center is leading the investigation in coordination with the public prosecutor's office.
