The French basketball team, ASVEL Basket, which operates under the leadership of ex-NBA player Tony Parker, has been targeted by a ransomware group. The NoEscape ransomware gang, has publicized their illicit on their leak site located on the dark web.

Based on the details provided by the attackers, they have successfully breached ASVEL's systems and extracted approximately 32GB of data.

The compromised data, as per their claims, encompasses an array of sensitive information such as:

  • player passports,
  • ASVEL's financial statements,
  • tax records,
  • non-disclosure agreements,
  • couting contracts for players,
  • other proprietary documents.

Efforts to elicit a response from ASVEL regarding this incident are in vain, as they remained silent on the matter.

Update - On 24th October ASVEL has confirmed a data breach following a ransomware attack by the NoEscape ransomware gang, with 32 GB of data stolen, including personal information of players, passports, ID cards, financial documents, and contractual agreements. It's possible that ransom negotiations are in process, as the the threat actors have threated to publish the data if not paid by October 20, 2023 but the data is not yet published. ASVEL has reported the incident to French data protection authorities and law enforcement.

ASVEL Basket, stationed in Villeurbanne, Lyon, boasts a remarkable reputation in European basketball, with significant participation in the Euroleague, which is Europe's premier basketball championship.

Industry researchers trace the inception of NoEscape ransomware to around May 2023. It adopts the Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) model, a strategy where the creators of the ransomware distribute their malware to operators, receiving a percentage of the profits in return.
