The Beaverton School District has reported a cybersecurity incident reported on the district's website and communicated to parents on Tuesday 14th of November. This incident has the potential to compromise student passwords, and it affects various student accounts, including those for email, Google documents, Canvas, and other platforms.

The district became aware of the security breach on the same evening and promptly scheduled a system reset for 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday. In anticipation of this reset, parents and students were advised to download any essential Google documents before 8 p.m. as the reset would render accounts inaccessible thereafter. The district informed the community that students would be able to reset their passwords and regain access to their accounts at school on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, the district disclosed that it believes it has identified both the source and the nature of the incident. However, they are refraining from divulging specific details at the request of the Beaverton Police, who are actively investigating the matter. The district's IT teams are working on restoring student accounts and devices, but they have not provided a specific timeframe for when this will be completed.

The district refrained from disclosing additional information about how the incident was discovered or how long the passwords may have been vulnerable.

The district emphasized that the restore process would require time, and they intend to share a comprehensive plan once it has been thoroughly vetted. They also encouraged parents to check if their students had used their school passwords on any other platforms, such as social media accounts. If so, those accounts should be considered compromised, and students should promptly change their passwords as a precautionary measure.
