On July 1, 2024, Monroe County servers experienced a severe network intrusion that resulted in the shutdown of most local government offices for an entire week. The attack caused a complete shutdown of most Monroe County government offices from July 1 until July 8, 2024.

he cyberattack was executed by the BlackSuit ransomware group. It encrypted critical files and systems, rendering them unusable. The hackers demanded a ransom for decryption keys or threatened to sell the data if the ransom was not paid.

According to the Monroe County, they haven't found evidence that sensitive information pertaining to employees has been misused, but have not disclosed details of the accessed data types or number of affected individuals.

The County states that the attack still under investigation by officials and third-party cybersecurity specialists and may take weeks before better understanding of the breach's impact is available.

Monroe County officials have committed to notifying individuals whose PII has been accessed.
