Capitol Federal customers impacted by MoveIT related data breach

Capitol Federal (CapFed), a bank headquartered in Topeka, Kansas issued notices to its customers warning them about a potential data breach that might have affected them.

The data breach was attributed to a vulnerability in the MOVEit data transfer platform, which was used by one of Capitol Federal's contractors, Fidelity National Information Systems.

In a letter sent to customer Capitol Federal disclosed that unauthorized access to some customers' personal information might have occurred during the breach. The exposed information may have included

  • customer names,
  • account numbers,
  • limited Social Security numbers.

Mmore sensitive data, such as full Social Security numbers, debit card numbers, and online banking information, remain uncompromised.

The number of affected customers is still unknown, but Capitol Federal has taken the initiative to notify all potential victims by mail. In light of the breach, Capitol Federal is offering its customers a year of free credit monitoring services. Additionally, the bank advises its customers to be vigilant and monitor their CapFed accounts closely for any unusual activity in the upcoming weeks and months.
