Charleston Area Medical Center reports data breach caused by phishing

Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) is reporting a potential data breach resulting from a phishing attack that occurred in October 2024.
CAMC claims that "a small number of email users were the subject of a phishing attack" which may have compromised patients' personal information. Following the incident, CAMC conducted an investigation with assistance from a forensic security provider.
The investigation determined that a single email user's mailbox was accessed during the attack. CAMC claims that no other systems or data storage were impacted by the incident
The potentially compromised information includes patients':
- names,
- birthdates,
- contact information,
- Social Security numbers,
- health records.
The number of affected individuals is not disclosed. CAMC stated they are not aware of any misuse of the personal information potentially affected by this incident.
The medical center plans to contact affected patients via email and has posted a copy of the notice online.
