The Coldwater Board of Public Utilities (CBPU) in Michigan has been alerted by Plume, their Wi-Fi management system provider, of a data breach stemming from a third-party service used for analyzing technical events in specific mobile and browser applications.

The breach is related to a previous announcement of a hacker about breaching Plume.  Plume's investigation found no evidence of a compromise within the Plume APP itself, but it was revealed that 200 CBPU customers were affected.

The compromised data includes customers':

  • names,
  • email addresses,
  • cities,

No financial information was leaked in the breach.

The CBPU issued a statement on the city’s website apologizing for the breach and assuring its commitment to customer data privacy.

They believe the breach is confined to the third-party service and does not impact network services. CBPU is advising customers to exercise caution in their digital interactions and report any suspicious emails to their Helpdesk at (517) 278-9276.
