Edmonds School District in Washington State reported a security breach in which an unauthorized individual had accessed their computer system for approximately two weeks.
On January 31, 2023, the district observed irregularities in its computer network, leading to a subsequent investigation assisted by external cybersecurity experts. The investigation unveiled that from January 16 to January 31, 2023, an unauthorized entity accessed sensitive data. This data belonged not just to current staff and students but also to former employees and alumni.
Following the discovery that confidential information was at risk, the district examined the affected files to ascertain the extent of the leak and identify the impacted individuals. This breach allowed the unauthorized party to view sensitive personal information of including
- names,
- addresses,
- Social Security numbers,
- student records
- financial information.
Once the investigation was concluded, the district sent out notifications to about 91,000 individuals affected by this breach.
