The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) has revealed a security breach that occurred as a result of a cyberattack on its member's portal. ETSI, established in 1988, operates as an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to advancing and testing technical standards within the realms of information and communication technologies, encompassing advancements such as GSM, 3G, 4G, and 5G, among others.
ETSI holds a membership of more than 900 organizations from 65 countries worldwide, comprising academia, government bodies, research entities, private organizations, and public bodies. Recently, they confirmed a security breach involving hackers gaining unauthorized access to "the IT system dedicated to its members’ work," leading to the theft of the list of its online members.
Unfortunately, ETSI has not disclosed any details about the attack, the number of affected individuals or the data exposed in the breach.
ETSI, headquartered in France, has taken action by cooperating with the French National Cybersecurity Agency (ANSSI) to investigate the incident and remediate the identified vulnerability. The organization has successfully addressed the vulnerability, implemented enhanced security measures, and reinforced its IT security protocols under the guidance of ANSSI experts. As a precautionary step, ETSI has instructed all online users to reset their passwords. However, it remains uncertain whether user credentials were stored within the compromised database.
