Frontier telecom hit by cyberattack, shuts down systems

Frontier Communications, a Texas-based telecommunications company, had to shut down part of it's systems in response to a cyberattack.

The company, which delivers internet services across over 25 states, discovered unauthorized access to its IT systems on April 14th 2024. Frontier implemented containment measures including the shutdown of certain systems, which led to operational disruptions that are described as "potentially material" - meaning they will harm the service and earnings of the company..

Tthe intrusion was likely executed by a cybercrime gang, which accessed not only company data but also personally identifiable information (PII) of individuals. Frontier believes it has managed to contain the incident effectively. The company has since restored its core IT environment and is in the process of returning to normal business operations.

No details are disclosed about the compromised data and systems and the number of affected individuals.

So far no cybercriminal group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Update - Frontier Communications confirmed that it experienced a likely cyberattack. The unauthorized access to parts of its IT is believed to be a cybercrime group. The intrusion resulted in the exposure of various data, including personally identifiable information, according to an SEC filing by the company.

As of 3rd of June 2024, the attack, is claimed by RansomHub gang on their leak site. The breach has supposedly compromised sensitive information belonging to over 2 million individuals. The stolen data reportedly includes:

  • Names
  • Addresses
  • Social Security numbers
  • Credit scores

As of June 1, 2024, Frontier Communications disclosed that a cyberattack in mid-April 2024 compromised the data of over 750,000 customers. According to Frontier’s filing with the Maine Attorney General, the compromised data includes names and Social Security numbers of 751,895 customers.
