Granite School District in Salt Lake City is reporting a cybersecurity incident that resulted in the compromise of personally identifiable information of employees and patrons.

The district is actively investigating with the help of external forensic cybersecurity team, and in collaboration with multiple agencies and organizations, including Utah State Board of Education and thhe Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)

The specific types and scope of compromised information are still under investigation. The number of affected individuals and financial impact of the incident remain undisclosed at this time.

The district first notified affected individuals on October 18, 2024, with follow-up communications sent on November 20, 22, and 25 and has advised all employees to place fraud alerts on their accounts

Update - as of 17th of December 2024, the school district reports that all current and former students of the district were affected, and that 15% of the student population had Social Security numbers exposed. All employee records were compromised. The district did not disclose the total numbers of affected individuals.

As of 20th December 2024, Granite School District reports that the information of approximately 450,000 current and former students as well as employees has been compromised. Exposed data includies

  • names,
  • birth dates,
  • addresses,
  • health information,
  • approximately 67,500 social security numbers,
  • payroll
  • bank account details.

The scope of the breach suggests it affects records spanning several years or decades beyond the current 60,000 enrolled students.
