Green County, Wisconsin reports data breach exposing residents' information

Green County, Wisconsin is reporting a cybersecurity incident that exposed sensitive personal and financial information of county residents. 

The cybersecurity incident first became apparent in February 2025 when Green County's computer systems went offline, causing widespread disruption to county government operations. County government phones and internet services went down, and for more than a week county workers were forced to improvise while many systems remained offline. Fortunately, the sheriff's department and 911 center systems remained unaffected throughout the incident.

Green County worked with external cybersecurity professionals to determine whether any personal or sensitive data had been accessed or acquired. The investigation concluded on May 19, 2025, confirming that personal information may have been accessed or acquired by an unauthorized party during a three-day period between February 2, 2025 and February 4, 2025. The exposed data includes:

  • First and last names
  • Home addresses
  • Dates of birth
  • Social Security numbers
  • State identification numbers/driver's license numbers
  • Bank account information
  • Health information

The nature of the attack and the number of affected individuals has not been disclosed. The county contacted and notified all potentially impacted residents on June 2, 2025. Notified individuals have been provided with best practices to protect their information, and individuals whose Social Security numbers were contained in the impacted files have been offered complimentary credit monitoring services to help detect potential misuse of their personal information.
