Hacktivist group NoName targets Italian infrastructure entities with DDoS

Learn More

A series of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks attributed to the hacktivist group NoName57 has targeted multiple Italian infrastructure entities. The campaign impacted several high-profile Italian targets, including Malpensa and Linate airports' websites, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Farnesina), and the Turin Transport Group (GTT).

The attack is ongoing for three days at the time of reporting and is causing website disruptions, but so far no visible operational effects on airport services.

The attacks appear to be politically motivated, with the group claiming on their Telegram channel that these actions were a "cyber response" to what they termed "Italian Russophobes." The timing of the attacks during the Christmas holiday period appears strategic, targeting a time when organizations typically operate with reduced staff and may have slower response capabilities.

The National Cybercrime Center for the Protection of Critical Infrastructure of the Postal Police is conducting investigations and assisting victims, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced plans to establish a Directorate-General for cybersecurity and artificial intelligence

The Postal and Communications Police Service characterized the attackers as ideologically driven cybercriminals seeking visibility rather than causing actual damage

The number of affected users or services has not been disclosed, though the attacks primarily impacted website accessibility rather than core operations. No financial impact has been reported from these attacks.
