HMG Healthcare has published a notice on its website about a data breach with a peculiar and potentially misleading title of "privacy update" and "substitute notice". HMG Healthcare, LLC is an elderly care provider headquartered in The Woodlands, Texas.
The breach, discovered in November 2023, involved unauthorized access to a server in August 2023, compromising personal health information of residents and employees at HMG-affiliated nursing facilities. Per reporting to regulators, at least 75,000 individuals are impacted by this breach, but the total number of affected individuals may be higher.
The stolen unencrypted files likely included medical records and personal details like social security numbers. No details are disclosed about the nature of the attack.
HMG took immediate action to mitigate the breach and prevent further sharing of the files but found it unfeasible to identify the specific compromised data. They have since enhanced their data security protocols and advise affected individuals to monitor their financial statements and credit reports. Despite the apology from CEO Derek Prince, HMG has not offered any complimentary monitoring or identity theft restoration services.
