Insomniac Games, known for creating the Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 titles for PS4 and PS5, has fallen victim to a ransomware attack orchestrated by the Rhysida group.
Rhysida has made public a set of screenshots displaying a small portion of content, including images from Insomniac's highly anticipated project based on Marvel's Wolverine character. In addition to this, the Rhysida Ransomware leak has compromised sensitive personal information. This includes:
- scans of passports of both current and former Insomniac employees,
- private details pertaining to Yuri Lowenthal, the voice actor for Peter Parker in Insomniac's games.
The crime gang claims to have other data, but there are no details about exposed data or impacted individuals.
The report indicates that Rhysida has given Insomniac Games a one-week ultimatum to respond, failing which the group intends to auction off the stolen data to the highest bidder. The ransom demanded by Rhysida is payable exclusively in Bitcoin, amounting to slightly over $40,000 USD.
Update - Rhysida has released over 1.3 million files (1.7 terabytes) online, including game release dates, spoilers for the upcoming Wolverine game, and sensitive employee information like HR documents, tax details, and passport information. The leak also revealed a contract between Sony and Marvel for developing X-Men games.
Insomniac Games released a statement in which they warned the public against playing a leaked playable PC build of Wolverine, cautioning about potential legal actions from them as well as the risk of malicious software inserted in the leaked build.
On 23rd of February 2024 - Insomniac Games is notifying employees of the data breach after the Rhysida ransomware attack and offering two additional years of complimentary credit monitoring and identity restoration services. A dedicated call center is available for affected employees' inquiries.
