Interactive Brokers LLC (IB) is reporting a data breach following the discovery that an unauthorized party gained access to an employee's email account. Interactive Brokers LLC, headquartered in Greenwich, Connecticut, is a financial services company offering direct access trade execution and clearing services for a variety of investment products.
The incident was initially detected on January 11, 2024. Upon realizing the breach, IB secured its systems, launched an investigation to assess the extent of the exposure and to identify affected consumers and notified law enforcement.
The breach compromised sensitive consumer information, including:
- Names,
- Social Security numbers,
- Financial account information,
- Driver's license numbers.
The number of affected individuals is not disclosed.
Update - as of 23rd of May 2024, Interactive Brokers report that they have “notified approximately 600 clients of a very limited business email compromise of only a few IB employee email accounts by an unknown malicious actor."
IB began sending out data breach notification letters to all impacted individuals on May 16, 2024. These letters provide details about the compromised information for each affected person.
