Irish water utility attacked by hacktivists, interrupted water supply

Learn More

A cyberattack targeting a small water utility in Ireland's Erris area disrupted the water supply for two days, affecting 180 homes. The attack, which defaced the Eurotronics water pumping system's user interface with an anti-Israel message, rendered the residents of Binghamstown/Drum without water on Thursday and Friday.

A message reading "You have been hacked" and "Down with Israel" appeared on the system's screen. The facility is now enhancing its security measures following the incident, which caused significant inconvenience.

No details are available about the nature of the attack.

This attack reflects a growing trend of politically motivated cyberattacks on infrastructure. Threat actors previously hacked the Municipal Water Authority of Aliquippa's booster station, although it didn't affect their operations or water quality. The group Cyber Av3ngers has also claimed responsibility for targeting SCADA systems in Israeli water facilities, declaring any Israeli-made equipment as a legitimate target.
