Learn More

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office in Indiana reports a ransomware attack that disabled its entire computer network and disrupted law enforcement operations.

The ransomware likely entered the network through a malicious email and remained dormant for one to two days before activating. The department's technical staff is currently wiping all affected computers and replacing hardware components to restore basic functionality.

The compromised or inaccessible data includes:

  • Sex offender registry files and coordination documents
  • Police incident reports and filing system data
  • Internal department network files and communications
  • General administrative data stored on local and external drives

The number of affected individuals is not disclosed. Operations have been moved to the Seymour Police Department to maintain emergency services while its own systems remain offline. IT teams are currently rebuilding the network on new infrastructure and attempting to recover data from external hard drives. Officers were forced to writing reports in standalone Microsoft Word documents while the filing system remains offline.
