Keenan & Associates, a prominent insurance brokerage and consulting firm based in California, is notifying 1.5 million of its customers about a data breach that exposed their details. This incident occurred in the summer of 2023 and affected individuals across various sectors, including education, healthcare, and public agencies.
The breach was detected on 27th August, 2023, when Keenan discovered disruptions on some of its network servers. The company launched an investigation with the aid of leading third-party cybersecurity and forensic experts. It was confirmed that an unauthorized entity had accessed Keenan’s internal systems intermittently between August 21 and August 27, 2023, during which they obtained data from the company's systems.
The data compromised in this breach includes sensitive personal information of customers and possibly employees, such as:
- Full names
- Dates of birth
- Social Security numbers (SSNs)
- Passport numbers
- Driver's license numbers
- Health insurance details
- General health information
No details are disclosed about the nature of the attack.
The College of the Canyons already reported a data breach caused by this incident.
Those affected by the breach have been advised to utilize a free two-year identity theft protection service provided through Experian. Keenan also recommends that recipients of the notification remain vigilant for any suspicious account activities or unsolicited communications that may arise as a result of the breach.
