The Louisiana Special School District (SSD) was hit a cyber attack by the Akira Ransomware Group in June 2024, leading to a significant data breach.
The district immediately notified Louisiana State Police. Law enforcement confirmed that the attackers accessed the SSD's network and had the capability to exfiltrate data, although it remains unclear if the files were actually copied.
The affected departments within the district include the human resources office, business office, Louisiana School for the Deaf, Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired, and the Special Schools Program.
The breach, compromised files containing personal identifiable information (PII) of students and employees, including:
- Names
- Addresses
- Telephone numbers
- Social Security numbers
- Limited medical information for staff and students
No details are disclosed about the number of affected individuals.
Notification letters to affected individuals, including students' families, former employees, and beneficiaries, will be sent starting the week of July 8.
