Madhya Pradesh Power Management Company Limited (MPPMC) is reporting a recent ransomware incident that occurred on May 22. The attack targeted the internal information technology system of MPPMC, which is utilized for communication among various departments.
The attack has severely impacted MPPMC, which is responsible for managing electricity in Madhya Pradesh by facilitating the sale and purchase of power according to demand. The timing of this attack is particularly concerning as it occurred during the peak consumption period of the summer season.
To ensure that essential tasks are not disrupted, MPPMC has implemented alternative measures aimed to mitigate the impact of the attack and maintain the continuity of urgent operations. There are no details on the alternative measures.
The ransomware attack targeted the company's internal IT system, known as IABS. The recovery of the IABS system is being carried out by engineers from L&T InfoTech under the supervision of the Union government's nodal agency, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), which specializes in addressing cyber threats.
The Chief General Manager (IT) of MPPMC revealed that the perpetrators of the ransomware attack had not yet demanded a ransom but did provide an email addresses to establish contact. MPPMC is currently following government guidelines and conducting thorough server scans while taking necessary precautions to restore the affected systems.
