The Daixin cyberattack group recently targeted the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD), listing the utility this on their leak site. They claim to have obtained over 33,000 files from NTMWD, and are announcing a forthcoming publication of the data.
Daixin allegedly encrypted 300-400 of NTMWD's servers on 11th November, which coincides with an interruption in NTMWD’s phone services reported on their website.
Daixin emphasized that they didn't harm the technical infrastructure or disrupt the water supply, a critical service for about 2 million residents in 10 North Texas counties. The ransomware group advised Texas residents to scrutinize their water bills, hinting at compromised billing software.
No details are available about the stolen data or individuals exposed in the attack. Probably until the release of the files by the ransomware group.
In response, NTMWD acknowledged a cybersecurity incident impacting their business network but maintains that their primary water, wastewater, and waste services remained unaffected. They are currently restoring their phone systems and have initiated a forensic investigation to assess the breach's extent, involving law enforcement as well.
