Nueces County, Texas, has fallen victim to a phishing attack that resulted in the fraudulent transfer of $58,000 from county accounts.  targeted the Nueces County Courthouse. 

An individual from the county's Risk Management office discovered the unauthorized financial transfer and alerted law enforcement. The phishing attack successfully deceived county employees into processing a fraudulent payment.

County Judge Connie Scott confirmed that the cybersecurity incident involved a fraudulent email that manipulated county personnel into authorizing a single check in the amount of $58,000 to be transferred from county accounts to an external bank. 

The incident is currently under investigation by local law enforcement. The county is coordinating with financial institutions and law enforcement agencies to trace the fraudulent transaction and attempt to recover the stolen taxpayer funds.
