The Ohio School Boards Association (OSBA), which represents over 700 school boards across the state, is reporting a cyberattack that significantly disrupted its operations.
The attack occurred on Thursday 8th of August, leading OSBA to immediately disconnect from the internet, resulting in their website and email services being taken offline. This has impacted their ability to communicate with their 3,500 members, especially as schools are preparing to start the new academic year.
OSBA has emphasized that it "does not typically" store sensitive information, such as Social Security numbers or financial details. As of now, there is no evidence to suggest that any sensitive member data has been compromised. The organization has engaged external cyber counsel and forensic IT specialists to investigate the scope and cause of the breach and assist with remedial efforts.
This cyberattack follows a similar incident involving the city of Columbus. Its not clear whether the OSBA attack is connected to the Columbus incident.
No details are disclosed about the nature of the attack, types of compromised data or number of affected individuals. As of now, there has been no ransom demand related to the OSBA attack, and the investigation is ongoing.
