The cyberattack was detected when The Inquirer's content management system unexpectedly went down, prompting an incident management process and a shutdown of some computer systems to mitigate the breach.
The breach affected the print publication schedule, causing disruptions in home-delivery services. It was determined that unauthorized access occurred between May 11 and May 13, 2023, during which certain files were viewed or copied.
Exposed information includes
- names
- other personal identifiers
- financial account numbers
- credit/debit card numbers,
- security details (codes, passwords, or PINs).
The breach led to the theft of personal and financial information of 25,549 individuals. The Inquirer is offering affected individuals two years of free credit monitoring and identity restoration services through Experian.
The Cuba ransomware gang later claimed responsibility, stating they had extracted financial documents, bank communications, balance sheets, tax details, compensation information, and source code. They posted these files on their dark web site. The Inquirer contested the authenticity of the documents, leading to their eventual removal from the ransomware gang's site.
