The security incident occurred on June 13, 2024, but was formally reported on May 2, 2025, almost a year later. The ransomware gang known as "Fog" has claimed responsibility for the attack, stating they stole approximately 60 GB of data from AISD's systems.

According to AISD's own notification, the incident involved "an unauthorized attempt to access data on our network" which "caused interruptions to certain internal computer systems." The district indicated in its notice that they believed "Personally Identifiable Information (PII) of some students and employees may have been compromised." The exposed data incudes:

  • Names
  • Social Security numbers
  • State-issued identification numbers (including driver's licenses and passports)
  • Credit and debit card details

  • Medical data
  • Health insurance information

It's not clear why AISD waited for a nearly a year before reporting the incident. The district began notifying affected individuals over the weekend following the formal report.
