The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) has acknowledged a substantial data breach concerning its Community-Based Monitoring System (CBMS), resulting in concerns over the nation's cybersecurity measures.
This breach is suspected to exceed the volume of exposure of the recent data compromise experienced by the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (Philhealth).
The PSA has emphasized that the Philippine Identification System and the Civil Registration System remain unaffected by this breach, both of which are crucial databases containing citizens' personal details. To address the issue, the PSA has mobilized its Data Breach Response Team and is rigorously assessing the extent of the data leak.
The PSA claims that from the initial assessment, the system allegedly affected is limited to the Community-Based Monitoring System (CBMS).
Unfortunately, PSA has not disclosed the nature of the breach nor the exposed data or impacted individuals.
They are also implementing preventive measures, such as isolating and shutting down the affected system. PSA has warned the public about potential malware links circulating on social media related to this breach.
Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary, disclosed that other government departments might have experienced similar breaches but have remained silent due to potential ramifications. He emphasized the need for these agencies to collaborate fully with the DICT to assess and rectify the vulnerabilities.
