The intelligence services of Poland are currently investigating a cyber attack that targeted the country's railway system.
Hackers managed to breach the railway radio frequencies, resulting in disruptions to train traffic in the north-western region of Poland. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, saw the hackers inserting recordings of Russia's national anthem and a speech delivered by President Vladimir Putin into the rail signals.
The attack caused an emergency stoppage of approximately 20 trains near the city of Szczecin, with services restored within a few hours.
There are no details available about the attack or mitigating measures.
A high-ranking security official stated that the Polish internal security agency ABW is leading the investigation and considering all possibilities at this stage. He noted ongoing attempts over several months to destabilize the Polish state, attributing these efforts to the collaborative actions of Russia and Belarus.
As the conflict in Ukraine continues, several Western nations have called for heightened cybersecurity measures. Poland is a vital hub for the transit of Western weaponry to Ukraine.
Experts speculate that Russia is conducting cyber attacks as a way to assess the efficacy of their hacking tools, for a more serious critical infrastructure attack.
