Qilin ransomware group claims to have breached Nissan's Tokyo-based Creative Box Inc. design studio, and to have stolen approximately 4 terabytes of automotive design data and intellectual property.

Creative Box Inc., established in 1987 and located in Tokyo's Harajuku district, serves as Nissan's "design think tank" within the company's global design network. Despite not producing large volumes of visible work, Creative Box retains a significant role within Nissan's innovation ecosystem, focusing on advanced automotive design and cutting-edge technological integration.

The Qilin ransomware group claims theft of over 405,000 files totaling more than 4 terabytes of data. Exposed data allegedly includes:

  • 3D automotive design data and CAD models
  • Internal engineering reports and technical documentation
  • High-resolution photographs and videos of vehicle prototypes
  • Financial records and operational data
  • Virtual reality design workflows and development processes
  • Proprietary documents related to upcoming vehicle projects
  • Internal planning documents and cost estimates
  • Photorealistic interior and exterior vehicle renderings

Qilin has released several proof-of-concept files. The leaked samples include sophisticated 3D CAD-style renderings of Nissan vehicles with detailed polygon models and triangle counts, indicating access to advanced prototyping and visualization systems.

Nissan has not issued an official public statement acknowledging the breach. Sources indicate the company is conducting internal investigations to assess the full scope of the compromise.

Update - as of 27th of August 2025, Nissan confirmed the breach. The Nissan subsidiary says they detected the unauthorized access on August 16, immediately blocked all server connections and reported the incident to the police.
