The Houston-based oil giant Halliburton is hit by a cyberattack that disrupted part of its systems at its North Houston campus. While Halliburton has not explicitly confirmed the type of attack, reports indicate that it has affected business operations both locally and globally.

The company acknowledged the incident as an issue affecting specific systems but did not disclose any details regarding the nature of the breach. Halliburton claims they have activated the pre-planned response strategy and are collaborating with external cybersecurity experts to investigate and mitigate the problem.

The company has asked certain employees not to connect to internal networks as a precautionary measure. There has been no confirmation that this attack involves ransomware, a type of cyberattack that has become increasingly common among major corporations.

No other details are disclosed.

Update - as of 29th of August 2024, multiple outlets are reporting that RansomHub ransomware gang is behind the Halliburton attack, based on indicators of compromise. RansomHub’s leak site does not mention Halliburton, so if they are behind the attack it's probable that there are ongoing  negotiations with the company.

As of 2nd of September 2024, Halliburton confirmed in an SEC filing that the RansomHub gang stole sensitive information in the attack, with the company currently assessing the breach's scope and the necessary notifications.
