Racine Unified School District reports data breach

Racine Unified School District (RUSD) is reporting a security breach that potentially exposed personal information of staff members, 

The breach occurred on December 13, 2024 and targeted the district's internal network and systems. The external systems used for areas such as human resources remained unaffected. RUSD has remporarily disabled district Wi-Fi as a precautionary measure and performed a forensic investigation. Staff members were unable to access email or use computers for routine tasks such as attendance and grading.

RUSD's Chief Information Officer, confirmed in a February 14 letter to staff that the breach "may have involved unauthorized access to a subset of data stored on our systems, and that this data contains certain staff personal information." 

The investigation determined that student data was not compromised, as it is hosted with an external vendor and not on Racine's local systems. 

The nature of the attack, number of affected individuals and specific types of staff personal information that may have been accessed were not disclosed.

The district reports that as of 14 that they had "fully recovered all educational and administrative operations." They are offering free credit monitoring and identity protection services to employees and provided staff with proactive fraud assistance.
