The Argentinian National Securities Commission (CNV) experienced a significant ransomware attack carried out by the hacking group known as Medusa. The hackers were able to breach the agency's computer systems, gaining access to a vast amount of documents and databases.

The attackers issued a threat, stating that if they did not receive a payment of US$500,000, they would release 1.5 terabytes of financial information to the public within a week. In response, the CNV released a press statement affirming that they had effectively isolated and contained the ransomware attack, preventing its spread beyond the agency's computers.

The CNV explained in their press release that Medusa managed to infiltrate numerous government computers and disrupt various official websites. However, the agency's protocol enabled them to isolate the affected computers and halt all external communication.

According to the CNV, the financial information that the hackers threatened to leak is actually public data, including balance sheets and other documents that companies upload onto the agency's communication system.

The Commission states that the financial markets have not been impacted by this breach.

The CNV announced its intention to press charges in order for the justice system to investigate the origins of the attack and identify those responsible. The agency stated that the charges were likely to be filed today and emphasized that they did not pay the demanded ransom of US$500,000.
