Reading Cooperative Bank (RCB), a Massachusetts-based lender is reporting a significant data breach affecting 24,041 individuals. The incident resulted from a phishing attack where a bank employee inadvertently clicked on a malicious email that appeared to come from a known sender within the banking industry with whom RCB regularly conducts business.

The security incident is believed to have occurred between August 8th, 2024, and January 31st, 2025. Through their investigation, Reading Cooperative Bank determined that certain customers' personally identifiable information may have been compromised. The exposed data includes:

  • Names and other personally identifying information
  • Social Security numbers
  • Medical records
  • Financial account information
  • Driver's license numbers
  • Credit/debit card numbers

Reading Cooperative Bank has notified affected individuals about the incident via mail. The bank has advised concerned customers to consider placing a security freeze and fraud alert on their credit files as precautionary measures.
