The Integrated Health Information System (IZIS) of Republika Srpska, Bosnia, resumed operations in six health centers after a 17-day shutdown caused by a ransomware attack. The system is vital for internal communication and managing digital health records and insurance status of patients.
IZIS was compromised on December 31, through one of the 10,500 computers connected to IZIS, locked the system using ransomware. The Health Insurance Fund of Republika Srpska announced that all IZIS applications are now accessible, except for laboratory services, which will be restored after ensuring their safety.
The return to full functionality across the remaining 68 healthcare institutions in Republika Srpska remains uncertain.
The Health Insurance Fund reassured that all patient data was preserved, although ransomware attacks usually result in sales of stolen data. At this moment IZIS or the Health Insurance Fund haven't published an incident report to clairfy their investigation, impact or attack details.
