Richmond Community Schools report ransomware, student data breach

Richmond Community Schools in Indiana report that they were hit by a ransomware attack on their computer network on Friday 27th of September 2024, resulting in the compromise of sensitive student data.

As a result of the attack, students are currently unable to access critical network services, including PowerSchool and Canvas. The school is actively working with federal, state, and local law enforcement to address the breach and restore services.

According to a message sent by Assistant Superintendent of Operations Karen Scalf, the following information was compromised:

  • Names
  • Addresses
  • Medical information
  • Student identification numbers
  • Contact phone numbers

The number of affected individuals are not disclosed.

The Schools claim that social security numbers were not compromised, as they are not stored in the affected data sources. School officials continue to collaborate with authorities to investigate and secure the compromised systems.
