St. Landry Parish Schools reported a ransomware attack which occurred on July 25. The attack was initially noticed by a staff member who promptly informed the board's technology supervisor.

The attack involved some form of spyware, however, the source of the security vulnerability remains unknown. To address the situation, the school authorities are collaborating with the Louisiana State Police, who are currently investigating the breach.

However, the parents of the students have not yet been officially notified, pending confirmation of whether student or parental information was stolen. If any data breach affecting students or parents is confirmed, the school plans to promptly notify the affected parties.

As of now, it is uncertain what extent and type of data the hackers may have obtained during the attack. Screenshots of data has been published on the hackers' dark web blog page, which includes a check for $57, a 2021 training course certificate, an education disability claim form, communications with an insurance department, and publicly available information on teachers' salaries.

According to the ransomware group's dark web blog, they are demanding a $1 million ransom from the St. Landry Parish School Board to delete the stolen data. The group has given the school a week to pay before threatening to leak the information online.
