On September 4, 2024, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus (Swinburne Sarawak) reported that it was the target of a ransomware attack last month. The attack is attributed to the RansomHub ransomware gang. The ransomware attack was publicly acknowledged by a Swinburne Australia spokesperson on September 2, 2024, following the listing of Swinburne Sarawak as a victim on RansomHub's dark web leak site on August 30, 2024.

The university took action to contain the incident, and notified the Malaysia National Cyber Security Agency’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT). A dedicated team from the campus has been working to resolve the situation and minimize its impact.

Swinburne Sarawak claims that its core business systems have been fully recovered and there has been no further impact on university operations. Forensic investigations are ongoing with the help of cybersecurity specialists to determine the full extent of the breach.
