The Tampa Bay zoo has fallen victim to a ransomware cyberattack, which involved the theft of sensitive information belonging to employees and vendors.

While the zoo continues its investigation, it has informed the affected employees and vendors whose information may have been compromised. Fortunately, the zoo does not store personal or financial data of daily visitors or members.

No details are available as to the number of affected individuals or types of data exposed.

Although the Zoo did not confirm whether the attack involved ransomware, the BlackSuit ransomware gang claimed responsibility for targeting the zoo on July 5.

The BlackSuit group is relatively new, emerging in May, and has already listed three victims on their extortion site. The group has apparent connections to the Royal ransomware gang, known for their high-profile attacks on the city of Dallas and others. Both BlackSuit and Royal are also linked to the now-defunct Conti ransomware group, which disbanded in June and spawned several new gangs.
