Tampa General Hospital has notified patients and staff of a data breach where hackers accessed files containing personal information. The hospital detected the breach on May 31, conducted an investigation with a cybersecurity firm, and reported the incident to the FBI to aid in the investigation of the criminal group involved.
Apparently during the attack a “criminal group” stole confidential information of about 1.2 million patients.
The attack exposed personal information including:
- names,
- addresses,
- phone numbers,
- dates of birth,
- Social Security numbers,
- health insurance details,
- other patient and treatment information.
Tampa General Hospital states that their electronic medical record system remained unaffected by the attack.
No details are provided about the nature of the attack.
The hospital is mailing letters to potentially affected individuals and offering free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services for those whose Social Security numbers were compromised.
