The Department of Treasury and Finance in Tasmania is reporting a security incident involving unauthorized access to the state's gambling exclusion database. The compromised database is an important resource for venue operators, Gamblers Help service providers, and the Liquor and Gaming Branch, containing information about persons excluded from gambling establishments.
The breach occurred during the weekend of March 28-29, 2025, when an unknown individual gained visual access to sensitive information about individuals excluded from gambling activities within the state.
According to a spokesperson from the Treasury and Finance Department, there is currently no evidence suggesting that data was downloaded from the database. As a precautionary measu, all affected individuals are being contacted directly by Treasury officials to inform them about the breach and provide necessary support services.
The types of exposed data and number of affected individuals is not disclosed.
The database was temporarily taken offline until security measures could be strengthened. Treasury has since confirmed that the database has been "secured, access limited, and investigations are continuing,".
As part of their response to the incident, Treasury has engaged Australia's national identity and cyber support community service, to assist affected individuals.
