U-Haul announced a significant data breach affecting approximately 67,000 customers in the United States and Canada.
The security incident, initially detected in early December, resulted from unauthorized access to one of U-Haul's systems through the use of stolen login credentials. The breach targeted the U-Haul Dealer and Team Members system, used for tracking reservations and viewing customer records, between July 20 and October 2.
The personal information compromised in this breach includes:
- customers' names,
- dates of birth,
- driver license numbers.
U-Haul claims that no financial information was stolen as the system infiltrated does not handle payment card data. In response to the breach, U-Haul has taken measures to enhance its security, such as changing passwords for the compromised accounts and offering affected customers a complimentary one-year membership with Experian IdentityWorks Credit 3B for credit monitoring and identity theft protection.
U-Haul is actively working to notify affected customers through mail. To further address the breach and mitigate future risks, U-Haul has also established a toll-free call center for affected individuals seeking more information and has committed to enhancing its existing security protocols.
