The University of the Philippines Tacloban College (UPTC) has launched an investigation into a suspected data breach involving its Learning Management System (LMS).
The data breach investigation was initiated in response to social media reports that detailed two separate security incidents, with one specifically targeting UPTC's Learning Management System and another affecting the Ormoc City Government. The university's LMS team coordinated with their counterparts at UP Diliman, where the LMS server infrastructure is currently hosted.
According to the social media reports that prompted the investigation, the compromised dataset reportedly contains more than 1,600 rows of student information, representing a substantial exposure of personal and academic data.
Potentially exposed data includes:
- Full names of students
- University email addresses (@up.edu.ph)
- City locations
- Links to profile pictures
As a precautionary measure, UP Tacloban placed the LMS in maintenance mode and issued advisories to its academic community, urging students and staff to be careful of phishing and scams.
