Data allegedly stolen from the University of West Scotland (UWS) has surfaced on the dark web, put up for auction by the ransomware gang known as Rhysida.

The cyber incident came to light when UWS reported experiencing system issues earlier in the month, although at the time the incident was downplayed as an inconvenience. They sought assistance from the National Cybersecurity Centre (NCSC) and the Scottish government to address the situation.

Rhysida, the ransomware gang behind the attack, is demanding 20 bitcoin (equivalent to £452,640) in exchange for the stolen data, stating that it will be sold to the highest bidder.

The fact that Rhysida has publicized the UWS data on their blog indicates that the university has chosen not to pay the ransom.

Update - During the weekend of 13th of August, the hacker group posted over a million documents onto the dark web. The breach, comprising 363 GB of data, encompasses a range of sensitive content including:

  • digital ID cards,
  • visa applications,
  • health records,
  • financial particulars,
  • even personnel files harboring allegations of bullying.
