This breach stems from the use of MOVEit, a secure file transfer program that was globally compromised in May 2023. Cybercriminals accessed and extracted data from this platform, with intentions likely to publish the stolen information on their website. Compromised Data Includes:
- Social Security Numbers (full or last four digits)
- Dates of birth
- Bank account numbers
- Federal income tax documents including Tax ID numbers
The number of affected individuals is not disclosed. It's unclear why USG didn't repor this incident earlier when the entire incident ocurred almost a full year ago.
Update - As of 8th of May 2024, USG has confirmed that it was the victim of an attack on its systems affecting the data of 800,000 people.
USG has started notifying affected individuals by mail, providing them with guidance on the steps they should take to protect themselves against potential identity theft.
