The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District (UCISD) in Texas was hit by a ransomware attack that forced the closure of all eight campuses for four consecutive days, disrupting education for over 4,000 students. Systems first failed September 12 at Dalton Elementary and Uvalde High School, leaving staff without internet or air conditioning, before escalating into a district-wide crisis.
The cause of the attack was a ransomware attack that breached the district's servers and spread to multiple critical systems including phones, air conditioning controls, security cameras, visitor management, and the Skyward platform used by students and staff. Uvalde CISD officials said an investigation into the ransomware is underway, including "a forensic analysis to determine how the malware was introduced and assess whether any sensitive information has been compromised"
Any exposed data and number of affected individuals is not disclosed but at minimum it covers the 4000 students of the district.
The district said it has reported this incident to the FBI, the district's insurance cybersecurity team, and other relevant agencies.
