The West Central District Health Department (WCDHD), based in North Platte, Nebraska, has reported a data breach that has potentially compromised personal information of select group of individuals.

The department became aware of the incident upon detecting unusual activities on its computer network and immediately initiated an investigation. This inquiry confirmed that an unauthorized entity had gained access to certain areas of WCDHD's network between May 18, 2023, and May 23, 2023 and accessed data files.

The compromised data includes sensitive personal data including

  • names,
  • Social Security numbers,
  • driver’s license or state ID numbers,
  • financial account numbers.

WCDHD does not disclose the nature of the attack nor the number of affected individuals.

Following the breach, WCDHD enhanced its cybersecurity measures, including the updating of account passwords and a thorough reassessment of its data protection policies and procedures, striving to fortify its defenses against future intrusions.

In an effort to support those potentially affected by the breach, WCDHD is proactively offering complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection services. To aid affected individuals in availing these services or to learn more about the breach, WCDHD has established a dedicated assistance line, operational from Monday to Friday, 7 am to 7 pm Central Time, except on public holidays, accessible via the number 1-800-405-6108.

WCDHD also advises all individuals to maintain vigilance in safeguarding against potential identity theft and fraudulent activities. This includes regular reviews of credit reports and financial statements, looking out for any unrecognized activity or discrepancies, and considering the placement of fraud alerts or credit freezes with the three major credit reporting bureaus: TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax, contactable via their respective phone numbers.
