The French national employment agency, France Travail, which was previously known as Pôle Emploi, has suffered a significant data breach impacting approximately 43 million individuals.

The breach occurred between February 6 and March 5, 2024 and exposed a range of sensitive personal information:

  • full names,
  • dates of birth,
  • places of birth,
  • social security numbers (NIR),
  • France Travail identifiers,
  • email addresses,
  • postal addresses,
  • phone numbers.

The exposed data pertains to job seekers registered with the agency over the past 20 years, including those who have a job candidate profile on France Travail’s platform.

No details are disclosed about the nature of the breach.

The breach has raised concerns over the potential risks of identity theft and phishing attacks targeting the affected individuals. France Travail has reassured that bank details or account passwords were not compromised in this incident.

France Travail has informed CNIL and advised impacted individuals to exercise heightened vigilance, especially regarding unsolicited emails, phone calls, and SMS.

The current cyberattack sets a new record for the largest number of individuals affected by a data breach in France, surpassing the 33 million people impacted by the Viamedis breach in February.
